Liminal Textiles

"Liminal" refers to a state of being in between or on the threshold of something. It originates from the Latin word limen, meaning "threshold." It is often used in various contexts, both literal and metaphorical, to describe a transitional or intermediate phase where one is not fully in one state or place but moving between two different states or places.

My fascination with the concept of change & liminal spaces began in my graduate school years and continued through Covid-19 as I worked to rebuild my life amidst the change that had occurred. Change is one of the few things that are always constant, and that is a concept I love to explore in personal work. These “Liminal Textiles” show the change of one material through various evolutions: the design begins as film photographs taken on my Grandmother’s 70’s Pentax. The images are then printed, pieced together in a gingham-inspired texture, and later applied to textile products such as blankets, pillows, and curtains.

My goal with this project is to allow people to see beauty behind things evolving more and more over time, and have that represented in household items.
